GOODBYE AGAIN
John denver, 1972

Choices

And the Lady walks two different roads
never shall they meet it seems
and each in absence for her holds
separate strands of fractured dreams.

And the one the Lady chooses,
answers only half the need
and the other then she loses
and from bondage is not freed.

And so the Lady stands
with emptiness her prison
and watches as the sands
run past her blinded vision.

And for the Lady's heart
neither road can fill the need,
and wand'ring in the dark
from her dungeon is not freed.

And evermore the Lady tries
to braid the roads as one
but the bond she sets is lies
and the work remains undone

And the Lady seeks a friend,
on that road she sows the seeds
and then passes in the end
to the road of other needs

And the Lady grasps the hand
that touches off the fire
and wanders sun bright land
overshadowed with desire

And fulfilled the Lady stands
and sees the chosen end
and empty are her hands
and vanished is the friend

And so the Lady turns
and views the desolation
unweaves the dreams she yearns
and sinks in isolation

And in hurt the Lady sorrows
as she feels the devastation
how many more tomorrows
will she walk without elation?

And can the Lady find
as she seeks a simple path
that the broken dreams of mind
can be unified at last.

Or must the Lady choose
to be lover or be friend
And must she always lose
Alone to be her end?
