DREAM'S END

She packaged up the heart of her
and locked away her needs,
then barred the door and soul interred,
lived fantasies not deeds.

Her worlds she wrote with love and dreams
to fill the empty self,
and buried all her silent screams
on deeply shadowed shelf.

And then she met her gentle Knight,
strength for which she longed,
and gazed in wonder at the light
that told her she'd been wrong.

He touched her heart and took her soul
then woke an aching need,
and reached into the deepest hole,
for hidden tender seed.

She blossomed under cherished care
yet longed for more than words,
and dreamed of all the joy they'd share,
a voice she'd never heard.

But fate decreed they could not be
except in poems she writes;
she walks in black reality,
a life of empty night.

And every need she'd locked away
devours all she is,
and darkness whispers soft each day,
"He cannot make you his."

She struggles for a place to hide,
to bury all the want,
recapture all the dreams inside,
break the bond that haunts.

And every night she spends in dreams
whose tales she can't control,
and every dream becomes it seems
a torment for her soul.

She yearns to feel his gentle touch,
arms in strength around her,
and aches for what she needs so much,
trapped by love that bound her.

Now Nightmare is her evening friend,
and Anguish stays it seems,
and Darkness may be love's true end,
but hope still walks her dreams.©
