CAGED

Ever they pace their cage of icy bars
gazing out at us in freedom as we are
then in fierce feline jealousy they turn
with slashing claws for what they daily yearned
then turn again to those also imprisoned
to rend with fangs in frustrated unreason
then in dejection to lie in panting rest
seeking sight of freedom's far elusive crest
finally to lie in exhaustion, bodies touching
doomed forever to exist untouching
two empty, grasping, clawing lovers
in self-made cage, no longer loving,
bodies touching
exist untouching.©
